Tibet Dining
Lhasa is located at an altitude of 3,700 meters above sea level, making the water boil at 90 degrees. So the rice and food there are a little bit raw and vegetable are scarce. The restaurants in Lhasa serve kinds of dishes, such as Tibetan cuisine, Sichuan cuisine and western style dishes. Nepalese and India dishes are available in some restaurants. Restaurants are easy to be found around the Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street. The most famous Tibetan dishes are listed below for you to have a basic understanding.
Yak Meat
The yak meat which is preserved in sauce and other ingredients is a local specialty serving to guests. It is cut in to slices and prepared as a salad with hot pepper powder and eat with barely wine. However, the fresh yak meat can also be cooked into delicious dishes.
Zanba
Zanba is a staple food of Tibetans which will be taken wherever they go. It is mainly made by barley flour, pea and oat powder and served with butter tea which will taste crisp and appetizing.
Butter Tea
It is simple to prepare. Stir the butter, milk, walnut kernel, peanut and sesame, egg and salt in a barrel, and then mix them with boiled red tea for a just moment. Then the butter tea is ready to serve. In order to drink it whenever, Tibetan people are always keep the butter tea in a teapot to warm on a stove.
Qingke Barley Liquor
As an indispensable drink of Tibetans, the Qingke Barley Liquor is called the Tibetan beer. It looks yellowish and tastes sweet and a little sour.
