Climbing Itinerary of Mt. Siguniangshan

Siguniangshan Scenic Area is in the Qionglai Mountains. In the Scenic Area, there are tens of mountains at the altitude of over 4000m. No doubt, it is the favorite area for the mountaineering lovers. The most famous peaks are Dafeng, Erfeng, Sanfeng and Yaomeifeng. All peaks have ever been conquered by the mountaineers. Therefore, it is practical to climb these peaks, but all you need is to be physically fit and have necessary professional equipment.

The Best Peaks for Climbing

Mt. Siguniang has four famous peaks which are all available for mountaineering lovers to conquer, but Sanfeng and Yaomeifeng are so high and steep that very few climbers can successfully reach the peaks. So, for most of the mountaineering lovers, the best peaks for climbing are Dafeng and Erfeng.

All Climbers Needs Siguniangshan Mountaineering Permission

According to the announcement on Jan.21, 2014, all mountaineers need to apply for the Siguniangshan Mountaineering Permission at Sports Bureau of Aba prefecture, and register in the management center of Siguniangshan Scenic Area where the local guides will be distributed in proportion, and then they are permitted to enter the scenic area.

Climbing Dafeng ( two days )

Dafeng is at an altitude of 5025 meters and is normally considered a pure trekking peak. The distance is about 23.8 kilometers from the entrance of Haizi Valley to the summit of Dafeng and the altitude rises 1800m. There is highland snow from December to next June. Technical mountaineer experience is not needed. Climbing Dafeng is not too difficult or dangerous so that it is a perfect choice for the primary mountaineer who don’t have climbing experience.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Siguniangshan Town - Dafeng Base Camp (4350m)
After acclimatizing to the high altitude of the region, you will start two days Dafeng climbing trip. Hike from the entrance of Haizi Valley along the route, you will pass Tibetan pagoda's (Baita) and prayer flags. Finally you leave the narrow valleys and start to climb up the mountain. In the late afternoon, you will arrive at Dafeng Base Camp at an altitude of 4350m. Get an good rest in a basic mountain hut for preparing the second days reach to the summit.

Day 2: Dafeng Base Camp - Dafeng Summit (5025m) - Siguniangshan Town
Get up in the early morning and start to slowly plod up the summit of Dafeng. It is a 8km but strenuous uphill path over rocky slabs. At approximately 10am, you will reach the summit. After spending sufficient time in celebrating your achievement, you need to descend back down to the base and then hike back to Siguniangshan Town.

Climbing Erfeng ( two days )

Erfeng is at an altitude of 5276 meters and is considered as a accessible climbing peak, but it is more challenging than Erfeng, and requires basic climbing equipment and limited climbing experience. The distance is about 24 kilometers from the entrance of Haizi Valley to the summit of Erfeng and the altitude rises 2100m.

After acclimatizing to the high altitude of the region, you will start two days Erfeng climbing trip. Dafeng & Erfeng ( four days )

It is available in a 4 days round trip to conquer two peaks - Dafeng and Erfeng from Siguniangshan Town.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Siguniangshan Town - Dafeng Base Camp (4350m)
After acclimatizing to the high altitude of the region, you will start two days Dafeng climbing trip. Hike from the entrance of Haizi Valley along the route, you will pass Tibetan pagoda's (Baita) and prayer flags. Finally you leave the narrow valleys and start to climb up the mountain. In the late afternoon, you will arrive at Dafeng Base Camp at an altitude of 4350m. Get an good rest in a basic mountain hut for preparing the second day's reach to the summit.

It takes 3 hours to trek to Erfeng Base Camp with most of downhill path, but requiring special care. Then you will go for another short acclimatization walk and get necessary mountaineering training. Finally, there is the chance to have a well rest in the night.

Day 4: Erfeng Base Camp - Erfeng Summit (5276m) - Siguniangshan Town
Get up in the early morning and start to slowly plod up the summit of Erfeng. It is a strenuous uphill path over rocky slabs. At approximately 11am, you will reach the summit. After spending sufficient time in celebrating your achievement, you need to descend back down to the base and then hike back to Siguniangshan Town.

Climbing Sanfeng & Yaomeifeng

Sanfeng is known as the most steepest peak with an altitude of 5355m, and Yaomeifeng is known as the highest peak at 6250m. Because both of these peaks are too dangerous and chanllenging, there is few mountaineering lovers planning to conquer these peaks. Only professional and experienced mountaineers are recommended to conquer these two peaks. Notices For Climbers

1. Alpine mountaineering is a dangerous activity. Climbers must be known of its risk and offer their health certification, buy personal accident insurance. Alpine mountaineering is not suitable for Hyperpietic or those with a cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease.
2. Participants must obey the order of their leader
3. Trekking and climbing at high altitude is more difficult than that at low altitude. Climbers should keep the rhythm of breath and steps and take rest regularly during climbing.

Tips for High Altitude Sickness

High Altitude Sickness is very common for everyone who arrives at the high altitude region from lower altitude area, but some are effected seriously and some are not, so there are certain ways to prevent it or minimize its effect when you climb mountains.

1. Mental preparation, altitude sickness is also can be helps psychological, so you should take it very normal and keep your mind in a comfortable state.
2. Keep your body physically fit, so exercise regularly and make physically fit.
3. Sleep well and rest well on the day before your arrival to high altitude and during the days when you are at high altitude.
4.Take steps slowly when you are conquering the mountains.
5. Take sugar and hot water with you when you climb up to the peak.
6. Drink enough hot water and avoid alcohols cold water.
7. Eat enough food and keep warm.

Requirements for Climbing

If climbers want to reach the peak and enjoy the most beautiful view, they had better choose to camp for one or more nights according to their itinerary. The following are requirements for camping and climbing which all the climbers need to be informed.

Camping and Climbing Equipment

Clothing: You usually need to prepare three layers’ clothes. Wicking layer: in spring and summer,sweat wicking underwear is recommended; in autumn and winter, thick warm perspiration wicking underwear is needed. Warm layer:in spring and summer, cotton clothes or down jacket liner is necessary ; in autumn and winter ,fleece pants and thick down jacket are recommended. Windproof and waterproof layer: Mountain Wear.In addition, in each season, you also need high waterproof hiking shoes, outdoor pairs of socks (not cotton ones) and waterproof gloves.

Sleeping bag: In dry environment,down-filled sleeping bags is better for keeping warm; in humid environment, artificial vacuum cotton sleeping bag might be better choice.

First-aid case: Antidote, eliminate powder, cold medicine, diarrhea medicine, Yunnan Baiyao, analgesics, gauze, tape, bandages.

Tents:Stable, light double-deck tents with high wind-resistance and rain-resistance performances are better.

Backpack: Choose a suitable and comfortable one for yourself

Fire appliances: lighters, matches, candles, magnifier

Lighting appliances: camp lamp, head lamp,flashlight

Picnic utensil: kettle, pot, tableware, Leatherman or Swiss Army Knife

Other appliance: Compass, map, rope, folding shovel, sewing, hook and line, machetes, cameras

Water and food: Meat, carbohydrates, lipids, salts

How to Choose a Campsite

1. Do not camp too close to the escarpment
2. Do not camp too close to rivers or streams
3. If it is raining, do not camp under trees
4. Do not camp on slopes. The door of tent should face the leeside
5. You have to clear the broken stones and sharp thorns before you camp
