Trip Overview
As Sichuan-Tibet Highway travels through mighty Tibetan Plateau where Tibetans and Qiang People live and prosper there for thousands of years, it would be a great chance for you to experience their harmonious life with distinctive natural environment. Taking a closer look at their exotic houses may give you some clues. By using rammed earth, gigantic rocks and organic materials made of leaves and branches found in the forest, local people manage to put their ideas towards life and religion into building plenty of extraordinary houses, many of which are with unique aesthetic and vibrant colors. In this respect, Sichuan-Tibet Highway offers a mixture blend of sightseeing and cultural exploration. This route will take you deep into the hinterland of Sichuan and explore the houses of Sichuan-Tibet line with our knowledgeable local Tibetan tour guides. We will also have the opportunity to walk into the homes of local residents, experience their life, work with them in the fields and use the harvested ingredients to cook delicious Tibetan meals.
- Danba Tibetan Village: With thousands of ancient towers, regarded as China's most beautiful village; the legend of the ancient East State, beautiful scenery and mysterious legend co-exist. It is worth to you to uncover her veil;
- Daofu Residence: The typical representative of "Bengke" wooden structure. Rows of magnificent, patchwork of red houses scattering on the hills forms a picturesque landscape;
- Xinduqiao Residence: Typical Minya folk house with white walls and red doors scattered on both sides of the road, coupled with light and mottled Populus forests, it is just as a beautiful picture of countryside;
- Dege Sutra-Printing House: It’s known as the "Treasure House of Tibetan Culture". Another typical model of "Bengke" dwelling house; you can also learn about the ancient printing culture and see how the craftsmen print the scriptures;
- Nomad Tent: It’s nomad’s moving houses, colorfully dotted on the vast prairie. Under the towering snow-capped mountains, you could expect the grazing yaks and sheep and boundless wildflowers awaiting for you.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Chengdu - Rilong - Danba (332km)

After breakfast,we will set off on our first destination, Dujiangyan, the oldest and only surviving no-dam irrigation system in the world. Then stop by the 2008 earthquake memorial site in Ying Xiu Town, where you will feel horrified by the destruction and devastation; stand in silence and say a little prayer for those who perished.
After lunch in Wolong which used to be the Giant Panda Breeding Base, we will cross the Mount Balang (alt:4,532m) and enjoy the magnificent mountain landscape along the way; we will be able to see the panorama of Four Girls Mountain if the weather is great.
At about 7pm, we will arrive in Danba, which is the first Tibetan Residence we’ll see along the tour.

Day 2: Danba - Jiaju - Zhonglu - Suopo

Today we are going to visit the Danba Tibetan Village which is hailed as the most beautiful village in China and is also known as the "fairy tale world in Tibetan areas." Danba Tibetan village consists of houses and towers in Tibetan region. They use stones to build a house, use the local Guanyin soil (white lime) outside the wall, and the red part is wood. The cottages are generally built on the sunny slope beam, composed of dozens of households or even hundreds of people. The lush forests, crystal clear streams and snow-capped peaks form a beautiful pastoral-style rural picture.
After breakfast, we go to Jiaju and Zhonglu to explore to the two ancient Tibetan villages, then drive 15km to Suopo to see the watchtower. On the way, our professional local tour guide will explain how Tibetan people build their homes and tell you mysterious stories here.

Day 3: Danba - Bamei - Daofu - Luhuo (235km)

After breakfast, bid farewell to the beautiful Danba, we drive to Bamei. After a short break, we drive along the vast Longdeng prairie and arrive at the territory of Daofu. What jump into our view are the rows of magnificent houses. Daofu residence is the typical "Bengke" structure (means houses are supported by woods) house with strong contrast of intense red and white external, while indoor carved fine and painted gold, each picture conveys an old story. Sculpture and painting are the essence of Daofu cottages. They combine ethnic customs, architecture, painting and sculpture. After visiting Daofu, we’ll drive 70km to Luhuo, where the residence is more shocking. Red buildings dot the mountains from bottom to the top. Local wood are used as beams, columns and interior, while the soil is used for paving floors and roofs. Daofu and Luhuo are praised as "Tibetan dwellings Museum". If interested, you can go to the local Tibetan home to visit their interior decoration and listen to the tour guide’s stories of these buildings.

Day 4: Luhuo - Ganzi - Xinlong - Ganzi (310km)

Leaving Luhuo, we drive 100km to Ganzi. Ganzi residential buildings are almost flat roof made of earth. This construction material has very good sound isolation and thermal insulation effect. 110km south from Ganzi is Xinlong County, which is located by the bank of Yurlong River. Here the residence are all flat roof houses, built by hillsides, just like a pocket town. But its appearance is majestic. We’ll drive back to Ganzi after visiting Xinlong county.

Day 5: Ganzi - Manigange - Dege Sutra-Printing House (234km)

Today we will arrive at the Dege Sutra-Printing House. It’s known as "the treasure house of Tibetan culture". Leaving early from Ganzi, we drive 93km to Manigange. It is the first small town after entering Dege. It’s high and cold here. Typical representative of "Bengke" residence but much lower just like dozens of “watch boxes”. We drive 117km forward and then arrive at Dege, which is located at the deep valley. Here houses are all built by the mountains, another typical “Bengke” residential style. Dege Sutra-Printing House is also a typical representative of Dege culture. Its early style and tradition are well-preserved. Here you’ll also have a rough idea of how the printings are made and watch the dedicated handicraftsmen working on engravings.

Day 6: Dege - Baiyu - Gaiyu - Batang (310km)

Leaving in the morning, we drive through gorges along Jinsha River to Baiyu and then continue to Batang via Gaiyu and Cuola. Houses in Batang area are built of earth and wood. The rich local timber is used as beams, columns and interior decoration, while the soil is used for paving floors and roofs. As for the roof, they’re made with white mud, rust stone and blended with bronze leaf juice, which enriched the connotation of the Tibetan buildings.

Day 7: Batang - Cuola - Litang - Yajiang - Xinduqiao (398km)

After breakfast, we’ll leave Batang and drive over the Haizishan Mountain Pass. You’ll have a bird view of the two turquoise highland lakes named Sister Lake. They lie close to each other like two emeralds. Then we keep driving on the grassland. If in summer, the whole prairie is dyed with colorful flowers. Soon we’ll arrive at the world’s highest town - Litang County. After a short rest, we keep driving. Over the Kazila Pass, Jianziwan Pass and Gao’ersi Pass, you will see a picturesque paradise. Magical light, boundless grassland, crooked brook, golden cypress, rolling hills, Tibetan villages scattering everywhere, and yaks and sheep calmly grazing...This is Xinduqiao, the fascinating "light and shadow World", "photographer's paradise." Enjoy the beauty of the area upon arrival.

Day 8: Xinduqiao - Tagong - Kangding (172km)

Get up early in the morning after dinner, the tour guide will tell the story of Xinduqiao Minya residence. Houses are mostly built by hills and they use rocks to set walls with red, black, white and other colors painting Sun, Moon and Triangle pattern, the symbol of population prosperity, bumper grain. After that, we’ll visit a temple of thousand years, Tagong Temple. Tents along the way are the symbol of nomadic life. Colorful tents scatter on the vast green grassland, showing a gorgeous plateau scenery. Then we’ll return to the Xinduqiao and climb the Zheduoshan Pass before arriving in Kangding.

Day 9: Kangding - Luding - Ya’an - Chengdu (325km)
Leaving early from Kangding, today we’ll drive back to Chengdu via Luding and Ya’an. Have a good rest at the hotel in Chengdu.

Our guide and drive will transfer you from the hotel to the airport/train station. Tour ends.

Itinerary Alteration
Once we receive your tour deposit, which is followed by signing the contract, your reservation is secured with legitimacy. Our staff will reserve the accommodation, vehicle, site tickets, meals and more, and pay the deposit for our suppliers. So if you want to alter to another itinerary, you need to cover the deposit we've paid, while no service charge is needed if you make some changes on the itinerary you booked.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
If you cancel the tour because of your personal issues, you will be liable to pay cancellation charges that are bounded by 3rdpoletour.com cancellation policy as follows:
1.) If you cancel the tour more than 30 days before the trip starts, you will forfeit 10% of the total land cost per person;
2.) If you cancel the tour 15-30 days prior to your trip start date, 20% of your total land tour cost will be forfeited as a cancellation fee.
3.) If you cancel the tour 7-15 days before the trip starts, you will forfeit 30% of land cost.
4.) If you cancel the tour 7 days prior to your tour start date, you will forfeit 50% of land cost.
5.) If you fail to show up or cancel at your scheduled arrival time without prior notice or later than that, you will forfeit 100% of the land cost.
If the tour has to be cancelled because of the natural disaster or the government restrictions that is beyond both parties control, we will charge only USD50 per person, this is just the service fee and larbor fee during the preparation. This is a rare occurrence!
