Shangri-La Dining

Since the population in Shangri-La is composed largely of Tibetans, most of the local food are Tibetan style dishes, including zanba, butter tea, barley beer, suolima wine, Dairy Products and etc. Of course, there are Sichuan and Yunnan style restaurants in Shangri-La provide common dishes for tourists and non-Tibetans. If you prefer to have a taste of the local Tibetan food, just have a try.

Zanba

Zanba is a staple food of Tibetans which will be taken wherever they go. It is mainly made by barley flour, pea and oat powder and served with butter tea which will taste crisp and appetizing.

Butter Tea

It is simple to prepare. Stir the butter, milk, walnut kernel, peanut and sesame, egg and salt in a barrel, and then mix them with boiled red tea for a just moment. Then the butter tea is ready to serve. In order to drink it whenever, Tibetan people are always keep the butter tea in a teapot to warm on a stove.

Qingke Barley Liquor

As an indispensable drink of Tibetans, the Qingke Barley Liquor is called the Tibetan beer. It looks yellowish and tastes sweet and a little sour.

Suolima Wine

Suolima wine, also called “Tibetan Beer”, is a kind of drink with distinctive Tibetan feature, tasting sweet and sour. Although it tastes light and gentle, don’t drink too much or it will be difficult to wake up once drunk.

Dairy Products

Tibetans are especially keen on dairy products like cheese, butter and yogurt. The milk are made in the old-fashioned way with their own cattle which are fresh and rich in calcium.
