Langmusi Travel Guide
Langmusi is a small town under the administration of Luqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Ganxu Province and Ruoergai County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It means that Langmusi is located in the boundary of the Luqu County and Ruoergai County.
Facts
A stream, called “Bailong River”, which is less than 2 meters wide, passes through the middle of Langmusi. The clear river divides the town into two parts. The north part which belongs to Luqu County, Gansu Province has Saichi Monastery, Celestial burial platform, etc. The south part that belongs to Ruoergai County, Sichuan Province has Geerdi Monastery, Namo Gorge, etc. There is also an Islam mosque near Geerdi Monastery.
The Bailong River has linked Tibetans and Huis together. They have different religion, but they respect each other and live peacefully with each other.
Langmusi is the holy land for the people of all ethnic groups in Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai to worship Heihu Goddess since the ancient time. The monasteries in Langusi has a history of thousands years.
Main Attractions in Langmusi Village
Geerdi Monastery
Situated in Sichuan Aba domain, Geerdi Monastery is one of the biggest Gelug Sect Monastery in Sichuan Aba. There are 18 temples of silvery roofs in Geerdi Monastery.The flesh body of Geerdi Living Buddha V has been enshrined in the monastery for more than 300 years. The temple with the flesh body of Geerdi Living Buddha V is located in the top of the hill. There are many people worshipping in front of the temple. Some Tibetans are walking around the prayer wheels. You will be touched by their sincerity.
Saichi Monastery
Located in Gansu domain, Saichi monastery is built on the hill. Unlike Geerdi monastery, most of the roofs of Saichi monastery are golden. It seems more grand and magnificent than Geerdi monastery. At the back of Saichi monastery is the celestial burial platform which is the only one where people are allowed to watch the burial ritual.
Namo Gorge
Namo Gorge is located at the back of Geerdi Monastery. It is about 5km long. It takes about 2 hours to walk for a round way. This gorge is of mysterious religious culture. The stone wall in this gorge is carved with Six-Word Memoirs and two Buddha figures of Tibetan Buddhism. It is said the words and Buddha figures appeared by themselves. The source of Bailong River is in the gorge. The water of the source is so clean and sweet that people will take a sip when they pass by. Keep walking along the gorge and you will see splendid cliffs with different shapes. The deeper you go, the quieter the gorge is.
Culture Experience in Langmusi
Sun Buddha
January thirteen of lunar calendar is Sun Buddha Festival in Langmusi. Sun Buddha is the highlight of Sun Buddha Festival which is to put the large Buddhist Tangka with the length of 20m and the width of 10m in the sun. Tangka is a kind of Buddhist embroidery with the portrait of Buddha Sakyamuni in the middle and Buddhist legends around the portrait.
There is a series of ceremonies before unfolding Buddhist Tangka in the sun. The large Buddhist Tangka is carried out from the basilica by 10 Lamas wearing red splendid attire. With the guards of honor clearing the way and players playing drums and gongs for celebrating, the Buddhist Tangka is sent to the platform. As it is unfolding gradually, monks and laymen start to meditate scriptures to pray for happiness
Qiangmu Dance
Qiangmu is a kind of religious dance performed in Saichi Monastery. January Fourteen of lunar calendar is the “Qiangmu” performing day. The “Qiangmu” performer must be a monk in the monastery. The movements of this dance are all related to the classical contents of Tibetan Buddhism. “Qiangmu” is not just a kind of dance for the monks, but also regarded as one part of their practice.
Best Time to Travel Langmusi
The best time to go to Langmusi is in summer, from June to August. During this time period, Gesang flowers are blooming all over the mountains and hill in Langmusi. Under the blue sky, flocks of yaks and sheep are scatted over the verdant grassland. You will feel relaxed and pleased with this picturesque view in front of you. Although it is summer, it is very cool in Langmusi and the weather is suitable for travelling.
Langmusi is also very attractive in winter. After October, there are fewer tourists going to Langmusi. You can really enjoy the peace of the small town without much interference. The town, covered with white snow, is quiet and magnificent under the sunshine.
Getting to Langmusi
You can go to Langmusi by car or by bus from Hezuo, Xiahe, Lanzhou or Chengdu.
By Car
Renting a car to go to Langmusi is a great choice. No matter you are in Hezuo, Xiahe, Lanzhou, Chengdu or Jiuzhaigou, you can rent a car to go to Langmusi directly. The price for renting a car may be higher than taking a bus. But it is more comfortable and convenient.
By Bus
Hezuo to Langmusi
You can take a bus from Hezuo to Langmusi at Hezuo South Bus Station. The buses leave at 6:30, 7:20 and 12:00. The whole journey takes about 3 hours. The ticket price is 50RMB per person.
Xiahe to Langmusi
The bus from Xiahe to Langmusi leaves at 7:40 am. You can take it at Xiahe Bus Station. It takes 4 hours to get to Langmusi from Xiahe. The ticket price is 70RMB.
Lanzhou to Langmusi
You can take a bus from Lanzhou to Diebu and get down the bus at Langmusi Brige. Then you can walk 3km to Langmusi town. There is another way to get to Langmusi. You can first take a bus from Lanzhou to Hezuo. Then transfer to the bus from Hezuo to Langmusi. The whole journey takes about 8 hours. The traffic fee is around 125RMB.
Chengdu to Langmusi
You can take a bus from Chengdu to Ruoergai at Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station. The bus leaves at 6:40 and 7:20 in the morning. The ticket price is 171RMB per person. It takes about 12 hours to get to Ruoergai. And you have to stay over in Ruoergai for the first night. Then you can choose to take a bus from Ruoergai to Hezuo and get down the bus at Langmusi Brigde or take the bus from Ruoergai to Langmusi directly. The journey from Ruoergai to Langmusi takes about 1.5 hours.
Jiuzhaigou to Langmusi
If you are in Jiuzhaigou, you can take a bus from Jiuzhaigou to Lanzhou at the JiuzhaIgou Scenic Bus Station. The bus leaves at 7am every day. You can get down the bus at Langmusi Bridge. If you travel Langmusi first, you also can take a bus from Lanzhou to Jiuzhaigou at Langmusi Bridge. The bus from Lanzhou to Jiuzhaigou arrives at Langmusi Bridge around 3:30pm. The whole journey takes about 5.5 hours.
Accommodation in Langmusi
Although Langmusi town is small, there are also many hotels or hostels in Langmusi for you to choose. They are mainly divided into four types: youth hostel, star hotels, homestay hotels and inns. The condition and facilities of star hotels are better than the other three types, but it is more expensive. Youth hostels are comparatively clean and comfortable with a good price. You may learn more lifestyle and culture of local people if you choose a homestay hotel. Inns in Langmusi are with poor sanitation and facilities. So, inns are not recommended here.
