Covering about 238 hectares, the base is home to more than 240 giant pandas, as well as red pandas and other animals. Giant pandas are the highlight, and you can see them in different areas of the park eating bamboo, climbing trees, resting, and playing. Depending on the season and the pandas on display, you may also have the chance to see panda cubs.
The base is also an important center for giant panda breeding, research, and conservation. Visitor exhibits provide an introduction to panda conservation and the work being done to protect and increase the giant panda population.

Located about 60 km northwest of Chengdu, Dujiangyan Panda Base offers a quieter and more relaxed place to see giant pandas than the popular Chengdu Panda Base. Surrounded by the green foothills of the Qingcheng Mountains, the base has a peaceful, forested setting with spacious panda enclosures.
The base plays an important role in giant panda rescue, rehabilitation, disease prevention, and conservation research. It is home to dozens of giant pandas, as well as red pandas. You can walk through different areas, including Panpan Garden, Shuangnan Garden, and Diequan Garden, and watch the pandas eating bamboo, resting, climbing, and exploring their enclosures.

3. Wolong Panda Base: See Pandas in Their Mountain Homeland
Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base is one of the best places to see giant pandas in a natural mountain setting in China. It is located in the Wolong National Nature Reserve, about 120 km northwest of Chengdu, surrounded by forested mountains that are part of the giant panda's natural homeland.
Covering about 150 hectares, the base is surrounded by forested mountains that closely resemble the pandas' natural habitat. Around 50-60 giant pandas are cared for at the base, while wild pandas also live in the surrounding nature reserve. Here, you can see pandas in spacious enclosures while enjoying a very different setting from the panda bases closer to Chengdu.
Wolong is also an important center for giant panda breeding, conservation, and wild-training programs. These programs help selected captive-bred pandas develop the skills needed to survive in the wild. So far, 11 captive-bred giant pandas have been released into the wild through China's panda reintroduction program, with nine reported to have survived.

Bifengxia Panda Base is another major place to see giant pandas in Sichuan. Located in Bifengxia Town, Ya'an, about 150 km southwest of Chengdu, the base sits in the scenic Bifengxia Gorge, surrounded by forests, bamboo groves, waterfalls, and misty mountains.
Around 60-80 giant pandas live at the base in spacious enclosures spread across the valley. Unlike a dedicated panda base, Shanghai Wild Animal Park is a large wildlife park with more than 10,000 animals and both walking and drive-through areas. The park is generally open from 09:00 to 17:00. Ticket prices vary by season, so it is best to check the latest price before your visit.

Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou is one of the best places to see giant pandas in southern China. Located in Panyu District, the park is home to around 16 giant pandas and is especially famous for the world's only surviving giant panda triplets, born here in 2014.

Although giant pandas live in the wild in China, there are currently no regular public tours for seeing wild pandas. Their natural habitats are mainly in remote mountain forests in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu, much of which lies within protected nature reserves.
Wild giant pandas are still classified as vulnerable, and access to many of their habitats is restricted to protect the animals and their environment.
