Habitat

Giant Pandas are mainly distributed in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces of China. They live in cool, humid and relatively high mountains with dense bamboo. The altitude of the mountains is about 1200-3100 meters.

Size

The length of an adult giant panda is 120-180cm (about 3.9- 5.9 feet); the weight of an adult giant panda is 80-125kg (about 176-276 pounds).

Diet

99% of Giant pandas’ diet is bamboo. In order to balance their diet, giant pandas also eat other things such as apples, carrots, panda cakes, sugar cane and rice gruel. Besides bamboo, wild giant pandas also eat other plants and occasionally eat dead or small animals.

Morphological Features

A giant panda has a similar body shape of a bear with black fur on its muzzle, ears, eye patches, legs, arms and shoulders, light brown or grey fur on its belly and white fur on the rest of the coat; its tail length is from 10 to 20 cm (3.9-7.9 inches); the paw has six digits which can help to hold bamboo while a giant panda is eating bamboo. Giant pandas living in the Qinling Mountain have rounder and smaller heads, bigger teeth while pandas in Sichuan have comparatively larger and longer heads, smaller teeth.

1. Giant pandas usually spend over one half day feeding and the other half day sleeping.
2. Giant pandas move slowly and grow quickly. A baby panda can grow from 100g to 45kg for a year.
3. Giant pandas are solitary animals. They live alone for most of their life and only live together for one month during their breeding season.
4. The average life expectancy of a wild giant panda is 15-20 years while that of a captive giant panda is up to 30 years.
5. Unlike other bears, giant pandas do not hibernate.
