Top Things to Do & See in Daocheng Yading
Located at an elevation of 3,800 meters, Daocheng is renowned for Yading’ s fascinating mountain and lake scenery, and the scenery around Daocheng is also deserve you to stop for the unique views. Prepare yourself to explore the alpine views of placid stream, crystal highland lakes, floppy blue sky and clouds, vast pasture and snow-capped mountains.
Yading Scenic Area
A journey to Daocheng without visiting Yading Scenic Area is not complete. It is a 3-hour drive to get to Yading Nature Reserve from Daocheng and the ticket charges 270 RMB per person with 3-day validity. In the nature reserve, there are three holy mountains and three lakes. While hiking in the Area, you will not only witness the stunning view of lakes, grassland and snow-capped mountains, but also experience the local Tibetan culture from the local temples and monasteries there.
Three Holy Peaks
The three holy peaks in Yading Scenic Area are Jambeyang (Yangmaiyong), Chanadorje (Xianuoduoji) and Chenresig (Xianairi). The three peaks are blessed in the 18th century by Buddha Padmasambhava and are the patron saints of the Tibetan people. It is believed that if a Tibetan pilgrimage to the shrine 3 times in life, he will be blessed to realize all his wishes in his whole life. And the best place to see the three peaks together is Luorong Pasture.
Xianniari, the highest peak among the three mountains, enjoys a height of 6,032 meters. Yangmaiyong is 5,958 meter above sea level with a sharp peak pointing to the sky. Gorges, forest, grassland and stream are surrounded down the mountain. Xianuoduoji enjoys the same altitude with the Yangmaiyong and unique for the Danxia landform.

Chonggu Temple is located at the foot of the Xiannairi Mountain. There is no evidence to prove the building time of it and it was destroyed badly with ruins remained. With the two white snow-capped mountain, yellow grass, colorful stream water and blue sky decorated with white clouds, the whole Chonggu temple just likes an appealing poetic picture.

It is located between the Xianairi and Yangmaiyong Snow Mountain and has an elevation of 4,600 meters. As the refraction of the light, the water in the lake appears five different bright colors. That’s why it got the name of Five-color Lake.

The top lake among the three holy lakes in Yading with an elevation of 4,600 meters. It shapes like a water drop with crystal blue water and surrounded by the snow mountain. The best view can be gained if you follow the main trail along the north shore of the lake and climb up to the hill in the west.
Milk LakeRecommended Travel Route in Yading Scenic Area
Generally, it takes two days to visit the Yading Nature Reserve. Here is the sample itinerary for your reference.
Day 1: Riwa (Shangri-la Town) – Luorong Pasture – Milk Lake – Five-color Lake – Riwa
For leisure hiking tour, you can get to Zhaguanbeng Stop by sightseeing bus. Then you can ride a horse or take the local Battery Car to Luorong Pasture. From there, you will star your hiking tour in Yading. First, you will hike about 6 to 7 hours (covering 5 km) to Milk Lake and Five-color lake. After visiting these places, you should return to Yading and transferred back to Riwa town for overnight sleep.
Day 2: Riwa – Chonggu Temple – Pearl Lake – Daocheng County
On the second day, you will have a leisure trip to Chonggu Temple and Pearl. After taking the sightseeing bus to Zhaguanbeng Stop, you will hike about 1.5 hours to Pearl Lake via Chonggu Temple. After enjoying the stunning view of Mount Xiannairi at the side of Pearl Lake, you will get back to Daocheng County.
Scenery near Daocheng
On the way to Daocheng Yading Nature Reserve, there are some other attractions, which worth visitng for the stunning landscapes. Also some famous temples and monasteries are located around Daocheng, where you can experience the local Tibetan religion and culture.
Besides Yading Nature Reservce, there are some other attracions near Daocheng.
Sangdui Town
It is a small town not far away from Daocheng County with wide pasture and smooth river running through it. View from distance, the villages, herds, cattle and sheep spread around the mountain range, which appears to be a peaceful and picturesque view.
Red Grass Field
It is located at one side of the road to Sangdui from Daocheng County. Every year between the late September to early October, the aquatic plants in the lakes and marsh all turn to red, which give a incredible sight for the photographer.

It is the largest temple of Gelugpa-sect in Daocheng County, built in 1642. There is a Maitreya statue in the temple sent by the fifth Dalai and two prayer wheels with more than 300 years.

Many spectacular pictures of poplar trees are taken here along the Bang River. Rivers, barley field, poplar trees, villages and temple, all of these make up a sight of highland pastoral.
Sela GrasslandZhalang Temple
Located at the north west of Banghe Village, Zhalang Temple is built in Song Dynasty with more than 600-year history. It is a Sakya monastery which havs not been harmed during the Cultural Revolution-era.
