Dali Facts & Culture
Dali, the short name of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, is located northwest of the Yunnan Province, 300 kilometers northwest from Kunming. With a history of more than 4,000 years, Dali is a really ancient town with traditional atmosphere, colorful minorities’ cultures, rewarded mild climate and beautiful landscapes.
It is surrounded by mountains on the east, west and south, and has Erhai Lake in the center. The most attractive highlights in Dali is the “Four Wonders”, which are Xiaguan’ wind, Shangguan’s flowers, Cangshan’ s snow and Erhai Lake’s moon reflection. Besides these, there are also other attractions, like Butterfly Spring and the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple.
Dali covers a population of about 3.47 million of which minority nationalities make up over 1.5 million. There are about 25 ethnic minorities inhabited in Dali for generations, with Bai Minority the most. The lifestyle, culture and custom of these ethnic minorities people make Dali a charm and serene place to stay. No wonder that people want to stay here for a longer time and refuse to leave. Every spring, celebrations and festivals will bring more visitors to Dali for there are March Street Festival and Butterfly Fest which can show visitors the real local folk customs.
