Dali Climate & Weather

Dali is located in the northwest of Yunnan province, surrounded by Erhai to the east and Cangshan Mountain to the west. One of the reasons why people have a tour in Dali is that the climate and weather of Dali is warm and mild.

The climate of Dali is mainly defined by its low latitude and high plateau. Dali lies on a low latitude in the northern hemisphere, which makes it a warm and subtropical monsoon climate. However, as it is located on a high plateau, the temperature tends to be lower than other low-latitude regions. Thus, Dali tends to have a relatively temperate climate all year round with no distinctive four seasons, but it can be divided into the dry season and the rainy season. The rainy season is from May to November, and the dry season is from December to May in next year. The temperature is high in dry season, especially in May. When it is rainy season, the temperature is relatively low and people need wear heavy clothes.

The weather in Dali is like spring all the year round, because the temperature is between 10゜C and 25゜C. It is not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter. However, the daily temperature variation is greater than the seasonal variation in temperature, and you need wear layered clothing, jackets and sweaters in the morning and evening.

The temperature in summer is only twenty degrees. If it rains, the weather is cooler. In summer, Dali is full of vigor, because plants have grown and bare mountains are in green. All are in energy in summer. If you visit Dali in summer, sunglasses and umbrella are needed because of ultraviolet ray and rain.

Best Time to Visit

This subtropical highland monsoon climate makes Dali a popular destination which can be visited all year round with warm temperature, lots of sunshine and fresh air. It is most welcome during winter months for those people who live in a cold region. And the best time to visit Dali falls on the months from March to July especially in spring.

In spring, it is suitable for people to enjoy the scenery of Cangshan Mountain, Erhai as well as Dali Ancient Town. In addition, most of the Bai minority’s festivals fall in March and April, for example, “Sanyuejie” is one of the Bai minority’s festivals, which starts on March 15th of the lunar calendar and ends at March 21st. In Sanyuejie, people will celebrate at the foot of Cangshan Mountain. It is said that Guanyin (a Bodhisattva) explores this area, so Bai minority celebrate in order to commemorate Guanyin’s contribution. At this time, Bai minority will sing, dance, play and have racing.

Another important festival celebrated during this time is Raosanling. It begins at April 23rd and ends at 25th. People will celebrate this festival at Cangshan Mountain and Erhai.
